In November 2004, Ryan Kamstra (poet and
performer) and Margaux Williamson (painter and video artist) along with
13 other local musicians and artists, decided that maybe the best thing
they could do to stop a war well on its way to not stopping was to perform
an entertaining, poetic, ghoulish, plotless little rock and roll stage show to
50 of their friends. The result was "The November Show; I want an
army" held at Toronto's quietest goth bar on Queen West West. But things have
changed, and that quiet Goth bar is now for married couples to make out in. But
since other things don't change, and since at least 18 people demanded more,
Williamson, Kamstra, Tomboyfriend and the army have returned with
"The December Show: Big if Afghanistan", a one-night reprise of the original
The show’s title plays on the fact that
Williamson/ Kamstra’s 2006 YouTube
performance video for "The End of Poverty; Take 5" had as its
first-ever subscriber a 21 year old from Afghanistan. (we refuse to verify
this).
Billed like the first show as "The Bob
Hope Show in Reverse," the two long-time collaborators will now
demonstrate for Toronto's curio-seekers, wonder-hungered, politically
beleaguered and ideologically ambivalent why their own particular vaudevillian
creature is Big in Afghanistan.
